The mail system...let the not very important mail and bills pile up for a couple weeks and then sit down once or twice a month and work your way through the pile. Within my pile was a "happy anniversary" card from Oprah Magazine and Hearst Publishing announcing my "preferred subscriber continuous service anniversary" that got my attention. Well actually what got my attention was the rate.
Guess what I got for being a preferred subscriber a 41% increase in the easily found and obtainable online rate...a whopping $12.35 more. And I have to admit that this isn't the first time I've noticed that being a "current customer" or "preferred subscriber" I'm being treated as if I'm the fat and lazy cash cow. I simply want what others have available to them.
Being a home based business that watches the bottom line and internet mom one of the many things I do very well is track down information. Or perhaps this is my way of procrastination when it comes to going through that big pile. A few clicks into my search I found I could get Oprah for $19.99 from magazines.com or for $18.00 directly from the Oprah website. Now it comes to value = is Oprah Magazine worth $18 to me annually or $30.35?
I found myself a bit annoyed and instead of throwing the card away and waiting for my subscription to lapse so I could reorder as a new subscriber at the lower rate I called the 1800 number.
