I just finished reading a post, Daddy did you....? over at Genuine Blog where Jim Turner is the Genuine Dad and spills the good, the funny and the questionable. Of course you want to answer the question, Daddy did you.....fart! It's a great story and worth the read.
The social norms around farts and farting just literally crack me up. I suppose it starts when you're young and beginning to be more verbal like Eli is now and you open your mouth and speak your truth and have an adult "shhhussh you" into silence that you begin to learn the societal taboo around farts and farting. As you know Eli has no problem with speaking his truth and mom and dad are doing our best to help him understand what is said at home and what is said in public - it's going to take a while.. Heck poor daddy is daddy toot toot, but truth be told I think he is quite proud as he offers his finger and says, Eli, pull my finger and let's a big one rip. We all giggle and make comments fit only within our homes borders.
As a young child at first I thought it was hilarious when my dad did the old pull your finger trick. As I got older I didn't want to play the game any more because I knew exactly what he was going to do so I wouldn't pull his finger. Some how I really thought that farts were controlled and it wouldn't happen, but since I had 5 other often willing siblings that darn finger always packed a punch. Hence the beginnings of my amusement with farting.
Tim's father died during my pregnancy and my father died when Eli was 3 months old - so Eli would have never experienced this universal finger pulling trick. The first time I saw Tim do it I thought, do all families do it? In retrospect I'm able to look at it and say, it's come full circle and in my perception is entering its 3rd generation of finger pulling, smiles, and the famous daddy giggle.
I do some times wonder how many generations "pull my finger" goes back...it's kind of a weird social norm that many know about but don't acknowledge. Since my dad was first generation American via Poland I have a hard time imagining his dad whom didn't speak English very well said it, but who knows. Unfortunately I can't go back and ask.
